Longtown Primestock Sale Report

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 34 prime cattle, 16 over thirty month cattle, 7,114 prime hoggs and 3,885 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th April 2014.

Some good cattle were on offer and sold at similar rates on the week. Top was 220.5p twice for Limousin heifers firstly from DJ Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage and then from A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen. More are required to satisfy demand.

A larger show of 7,114 prime hoggs of which 526 were sold as store sheep, was forward to the usual busy ring of buyers with all firms again keen for sheep in the build up to Easter. More large runs of Cheviot and Texel hoggets were forward with one of the best shows for quality seen in many weeks. Heavy hoggs sold better than expected in comparison to other centres this week, with lightweight hoggs in great demand, especially under 35 kilos and many more could be sold to advantage. Overall average of 216.6p per kilo (224.6p SQQ). The sale was topped at 295p per kilo and £124 per head for Beltex from Nether Stenries.
