The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 14 prime cattle, 0 young bulls, 12 over thirty month cattle, 7,191 prime lambs and 5,958 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th December 2014.
Prime cattle short in supply but upheld recent high rates. Top price to 227.5p, twice, for Limousin heifers from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House and from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn.

Another great show of 7,191 prime lambs forward to a full ring of buyers busy for sheep. Export weight and light weight lambs remain very easily sold with 50 kilo plus lambs similar. 44-48 kilos were a lot harder to cash as the home market slows down over the festive period. Many mor 32-38 kilo lambs could have been sold to advantage. The sale averaged 182.9p/kg (SQQ 186.6p). Top price of 265p per kilo for Beltex from Drummuie and to £127 per head for Texels from Dinnans.

A larger show of 5,958 cast ewes and rams were forward to a full ring of buyers all keen for sheep. Ewes remain short of requirements across the board and don’t look like being in any surplus numbers for a while. The sale would be a lot dearer on the week, especially for smaller ewes. The sale was topped at £170 for a Texel ram from Ringliggate. Texel ewe to £166 from Thorns. Blackface ewes to a massive £95 for an excellent pen of 40 from Tonehall.
