Longtown Primestock Sale Report
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 7 prime cattle, 3,343 prime hoggs and 2,087 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Friday 2nd January 2015.
Only a small show of 7 prime cattle due to the New Year with trade similar to recent weeks. Top price to 215.5p for a Limousin heifer sold by W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House, purchased by Border Meats Butchers, Lockerbie.

A smaller show of 3,343 prime hoggs forward to a full ring of buyers, but all requiring less numbers. Lightweight hoggs and export weight hoggs remained easily cashed, however, the 44-48 kilo hoggs yet again proved the stickiest to sell. The sale averaged 181.32/kg (SQQ 185.9p). Top price of 237p per kilo for Beltex from Finnieness and to £111 per head for Texels from Lairdlaugh.

A small show of 2,087 cast ewes and rams were forward due to holidays in Scotland and concerns over the electronic tagging. All buyers keen for sheep with the whole sale averaging £100, up £12 - £14 on the week.
The sale was topped at £171 for a Texel ram from Stepend. Texel ewes to £162 from Pasture House. Blackface ewes to £109 from Quarry House.
