Longtown Primestock Sale Report
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 5 prime cattle, 2 OTM cattle, 1,672 prime lambs and 3,565 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd July 2015.
A small show of prime cattle forward, trade much sharper for all classes. Finishers should take advantage of the increased trade and competition.
Heifers sold to 222.5p per kilo from Messrs Fiddler,
Barrow Ling to Border Meats, Lockerbie.
Bullocks sold to 209.5p per kilo from Messrs Taylor, Englishtown, to
B. Taylor, Lockerbie.
The 1,672 prime lambs were much sharper than expected, mainly owing to smaller shows of lambs around the country all week. Lightweight lambs easier on the week as forward in more numbers, export and heavier weight lambs dearer. Overall average was 168.9p (SQQ 170.7p), which would be the best average seen this week by some distance, however may be short lived as more numbers come foward. Top price of £88 per head for Suffolks from Hollands and to 194p per kilo for Texels from Hollands and Cottage.

A larger show of 3,565 cast ewes, rams and old season hoggets saw fat ewes harder to cash, plain ewes slightly easier but good lean selling ewes and hill ewes remain good selling trade. Rams continued to stay in demand and short of buyer requirements.
