Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 prime cattle, 9 OTM cattle, 3,458 prime lambs and 6,116 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th September 2015.
Cast cows & OTM’s averaged 139.5p per kilo.
The heading says it all, fresh faces at the ringside, more competition for all kinds and a flying trade throughout. The sale was topped at 166p by a Galloway from Messrs Pittendrigh, who sold others to 148p. OTM steers sold to 156p from Horncastle Farm, Black & Whites topped at 150p from John Huddleston. Hill Angus to 117p. Top per head was £1,253.30 for a Galloway from Horncastle Farm.
More urgently needed to keep the growing company of buyers coming!
Prime cattle saw numbers tighter due to the good weather and all classes were well bid for and dearer on the week. The sale was topped at 229.5p for a 625kg Limousin bullock sold by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, others to 226.5p for 680 kg also from Messrs Taylor and bought by Mr G. Moor.
Young bulls very dear and more required, topping at 209.5p from J. Robison & Son, Oakwood Hill.

A similar show of 3,458 prime lambs were forward to a full ring of buyers. Heavy lambs and good quality lambs were forward in fewer numbers with a large number of Mule and hill lambs forward diluting the average. Overall average of 146.9p (SQQ 147.3p).
Top price of £90 per head for Texels from Firth Farm and to 199p per kilo for Beltex from Gelston Castle.

A slightly smaller show of 6,116 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual large ringside of buyers. Heavy ewes continue to sell at recent high rates being short of buyers requirements, with large numbers of small lean hill type ewes forward.
