Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 23 OTM cattle, 5,129 prime lambs and 4,137 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th December 2015.
Roadhead cow tops sale
An entry of 23 working cows was offered to a full company of buyers with Christmas Show buyers making a welcome return. Trade was sharper on the week, top price was 116p paid for a Limousin x cow from Walter Waugh, The Flatt. Scotch bred Hereford x cow from Ivan Jackson sold to 115p, other Hereford x sold to 106p from Messrs Pollock. Blonde cows from Messrs Ewing sold to 114p with others off the same farm at 110p. Dairy cows sold to 103p from Messrs Imrie for an Ayrshire.

A similar show of 5,129 prime lambs were forward to the usual full ring of buyers looking for sheep, although larger numbers presented throughout the country resulted in the overall average of 155p per kilo (SQQ 158.5p) being slightly less on the week. Export lambs sold well, light lambs harder to cash and heavyweight lambs (50 kilo plus) short of buyer requirements.
Top price of 220p per kilo for Beltex from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside with a top per head of £93 for Texels from Messrs Bell, Kirkton. Many more best quality Beltex and Texel lambs could be sold to advantage.

A similar show of 4,137 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade was £2 to £3 easier on the week, especially for over fat ewes in all categories. Mule ewes saw the biggest decrease whilst lean selling ewes of all classes were in constant demand. Tups remain similar.
