Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 21 prime cattle, 34 OTM cattle, 3 calves, 4,365 prime hoggs and 5,085 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th February 2016.
An entry of 58 cattle comprising 34 cull cows, 21 prime cattle and 3 calves were forward at the weekly primestock sale.
Bewcastle cows top sale at 142p
An excellent entry of 34 cows were offered to a full company of buyers, trade was tremendous throughout with all classes in demand, particularly Black & White cows direct from the parlour the trade of the day. A marvellous load of cows from Harry Gass and family topped the sale at 142p with a Limousin x with another at 130p. British Blue hill sucklers topped at 117p from Paul Magnay. George Dinnin’s Blonde x sold to 107p. Native breeds topped at 128p for a homebred Angus from Stuart Fisher with son Ross selling his to 122p. Galloways sold to 104p from Tom Carruthers. Top price per head was £915.20 fir a tremendous Angus from Cleugh Head. A monster of an Angus from Carruthers Farm sold to £897.60. Black & White sold to 100p from Dick Wigham and grossed £740, but worked cows selling between 320-460 were on fire.
As ever more are needed to supply demand.
Prime cattle a nice entry but suffered from several heifer overripe. Top price came from the Englishtown stable with a Limousin steer at 213p, followed by another at 207p. Heifers topped at 201p for a Limousin from Stuart & Tucker Armstrong. Topping per head was £1,349 for a Charolais heifer from Mr Fiddler, Barrow Ling.
A small selection of calves sold to a top of £275.
A larger show of 4,365 prime hoggs were forward to a strong ring of buyers with new faces present resulting in the best trade this year, with all classes easily sold and short of buyer requirements, many more could be sold to advantage. Best quality hoggs still short in numbers for an ever increasing trade. Heavyweight hoggs regularly over £100. Overall average of 188.3p per kilo (SQQ 189.5p).
Top price of 269p per kilo for Beltex from D. Mackinnon, Low Tirfergus, Campbeltown and £115 per head for Texels from Muircleugh Partners, Lauder.

A tremendous show of 5,085 cast ewes and rams were forward to a much larger ring of 19 active buyers with all classes £4-£5 dearer on the week, especially Mule ewes which have struggled recently. Good lean selling Continental ewes continued at recent high rates, obtaining a premium and remaining short of buyer requirements.
