Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 29 prime cattle, 12 OTM cattle, 3,412 prime hoggs and 2,454 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th April 2016.
An increased number again with heifers averaging a healthy 200p, plenty of demand and more required to satisfy growing interest. Top price of the day was 219.5p & 218.5p twice, all three heifers from A & W J Taylor, Dashwell Green and bought by Mr D Kemp. Charolais heifers sold to 214.5p; purchased by MJ Wharton Butcher, Wigton, from Dashwell Green. Messrs Taylor’s sold a run of lovely heifers to average 215.4p.

A shortage of beef cows, with 80% of the sale dairy cows. Trade was on par with other centres. Top price £871.25 for a Holstein cow sold by Messrs J Irving & Son, The Stubb.

A similar show of 3,412 hoggs were forward to the usual full ring of buyers all keen for sheep and with a shortage of numbers Thursdays market bucked this week’s national trend, and saw a very healthy average of 186p (SQQ 193p). Best quality hoggs, export and lightweight hoggs were keenly sought after and sharper on the week with heavy weight hoggs proving harder to cash as has been the case all week. Sale was topped at £124 for Beltex from Waterside and closely followed at £123 again for Beltex from Muir, Cleughbrae. Top price per kilo was 318p for Beltex from Tony Gribbon, Waterside.

A similar show of 2,454 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with best selling ewes and rams remaining dear, and lightweight ewes more sought after than last week. Mule ewes and over fat ewes slightly easier. Sale topped at £144 twice for Texel ewes from Beckfoot and Texel rams from Slealands.
