Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 42 prime cattle, 10 OTM cattle, 3,581 prime hoggs and 2,828 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st April 2016.
A much larger show of prime cattle, the biggest for sometime. All classes slightly less on the week, but considering the falling deadweight price and restricted weight limits the market still proves to be the better option. The sale was topped at 215.5p for a marvellous Charolais heifer sold by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen and bought by local butchers W Kirkup & Sons, Longtown. Limousin heifers peaked at 211.5p from J & J & D Taylor, Englishtown going to JB Fitton Ltd, also Limousin bullocks sold to 209.5p shown by Messrs Taylor, Dashwellgreen and purchased by MJ Wharton, Butcher, Wigton.

A mixed show of mainly plainer cows or non farm assured saw trade maintain recent weeks. Top price of £1122.28 for a Limousin sold by T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke.

A similar show of 3,581 hoggs were forward to the normal ring of buyers, with trade emulating the national average this week – average 170.5p (172p SQQ). Export hoggs and best quality hoggs still in demand along with best fleshed heavy weight hoggs. The 44-48kg hoggs were hardest to sell and the lightweight hoggs easier. Too many hoggs lacking finish throughout the sale which reflects in the overall average.

A larger show of 2828 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with all classes steadier on the week, especially over fat ewes. Hill ewes remained easily sold and were short of buyer requirements. Best selling ewes still keenly sought after, with rams remaining similar. The sale topped at £138 for Texels from J Elliot, Roxburgh Mains.
