Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 14 prime cattle, 32 OTM cattle, 2,817 prime lambs and 6,209 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th August 2016.
A very small show with a mixed selection, and all grass cattle. Top price of 212.5p was paid for a Limousin heifer shown by LE Grice & Son, Newtown. Bulls sold to 199.5p for a Limousin from GJA Rome & Co., Niven Hill.

OTM: Ewing family tops the sale
A marvelous entry of 32 cows were offered to the usual good company of eight buyers who bid freely for all types of cow, with demand outstripping supply. Andrew Ewing fetched a wonderful load of cows which topped at 150p for a Limousin, with others to 143p. Continental passport cows sold to 132p for a Blue. Native bred sucklers sold to 112p from John Higgs with Angus to 110p. The Bradbury family renowned for selling quality store lambs sold an aged Welsh Black to 98p. Blue Greys sold to 102p from Jim Wood.
Dairy cows were on the whole out of parlour types and topped at 114p from Alan & David Coulthard, with Dairy Shorthorns selling to 100p from the James family. OTM’s were a small entry and topped at 145p for a Limousin steer from Richard Ritson, with others to 141p from Walton.
Top price per head was £1102.50 from Dumbretton with others to £1015.30 Annan, £916.50 Swaites. Dairy types to £792, Justicetown.
A larger show of 2,817 lambs were forward to a busy ring of buyers all actively looking for lambs and many going home short of requirements. This resulted in the best average of the week of 197ppk. An excellent entry of Texel and Beltex export lambs met a flying trade from start to finish, with heavyweight lambs 45kg plus keenly sought after and still well short of supply. Lightweight lambs were scarcer in numbers after last week’s dip, however rallied around to get back in front of store trade. Many more lambs in all categories could be sold to vendor’s advantage. Sale topped at £124 for Texel lambs from Sutherland, Carran, Caithness and to 233p for Texels from Copperthorns and Sowerby Wood.

Also included today was the Annual Young Handlers Show & Sale, kindly sponsored by Farmers Guardian, where over 50 children were present with their lambs. The show was ably judges by Mr Will Tinning of Dunbia Ltd, who after some deliberation in the difficult classes awarded the championship to Maisie Milburn of Wallend Farm, Greenhead; whose family are regular market supporters, for her outstanding Beltex lamb which scaled 44kg and realised £130 to the judge. In reserve was a girl who put the boys in their place today, with Alexandra Bouch’s 40kg Beltex lamb realising £106 also to the judge. A great show of lambs was forward and sold accordingly, which can be seen in the following prices:

The largest show for some time of 6,209 cast ewes and rams were forward to the country’s largest ringside of weekly buyers, resulting in a flying trade from start to finish with heavyweight ewes £3-£4 up on the week and an extremely large show of hill ewes realising last week’s strong rates. Rams remain in demand and short of requirements. Sale topped at £156 for Texel rams from Hollins and £155 for Texel ewes from Unthank.
