Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 25 cattle, 5,631 prime hoggs and 4,732 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th February 2017.
The company held its weekly primestock sale of cattle where 25 head were forward.
OTM’s: All the usual buyers were in attendance and trade easily held at late rates for all types forward. The section was topped by Brian Davidson with a non-fabbl Charolais x which made 117p. Hill cows sold to 116p from Tanlawhill Farming for a black Angus and from Sorbietrees for a red Angus. Top price per head was £812.45 from Westerkirk.
A small entry of overage clean cattle sold to 184p for an Angus heifer from David Wilson, Plumpe and 150p for a Belted Galloway steer from Richard Armstrong. Clean cattle were a short entry of native breeds and topped at 201p for an Angus steer from David Wilson, with Hereford heifers from Jerriestown realising £1,130.30.
Remember maximum commission £30 and more numbers are needed to supply demand.
Another large show of 5,631 prime hoggs was forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. A much more mixed show for quality was on offer with far more heavyweight hoggs forward with a larger amount of Blackface and Mule hoggs included, resulting in a lesser overall average. After last week’s fine show of best hoggs, these were lacking in numbers this week to fill buyers demand, although trade for them remained very dear. One plus point was that the heavyweight hoggs were dearer and easier to sell, with lightweight hoggs remaining similar. Many more best quality export weight hoggs required to fill increasing demand.
Sale topped at 264p for great Beltex hoggs from Messrs Tiplady, Co Durham, and top price per head of £107 for Beltex from Messrs McKie, Finnieness, Castle Douglas. Sale averaged 170.0p (SQQ 175.8p).

A much larger show of 4,732 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers. Heavyweight ewes remain very easy to sell and were in demand all day. Mule ewes maintained recent high rates, whilst the strongest Cheviots were dearer. Horned ewes were £2-3 easier on the week, with a large show being forward after last week’s large rise. Rams remind at recent high rates.
Sale topped at £148 for Texel ewes from Messrs Runciman, Allanshaws. Rams to £118 for Texels from Huntington, Berwick.
