Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 28 cattle, 5,350 prime hoggs and 4,247 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd March 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of prime cattle and OTM’s where an entry of 28 head were forward.
OTM’s: An entry short of numbers due to several vendors unable to show having purchased at Tuesday’s store sale. Buyers were out in force and everything was in demand and pounds dearer on the week. The top price was 180p for a clean Angus heifer from David Wilson, who sold others to 178p. Sucklers were a mixed quality entry and topped at 131p for a Limousin x from Ian Aitchison, closely followed at 128p for a Simmental from Clive and Harry Houldey. Dairy cows topped at 115p from Fraser Beard and family. Top price per head was £1,054.00 from Kirtleton House. Prime cattle: Short of numbers with several ripe heifers forward. Top price of 207p was paid for a Limousin heifer from David Wilson, who also sold Shorthorns to 205p.
A larger show of 5,350 prime hoggs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers with all classes dearer on the week. Many more heavyweight hoggs over 50kg were forward, with a larger show of light hoggs also. A tremendous show of Blackface hoggs met a fast selling trade, however good quality lean export hoggs were hard to come by. Far too many hoggs, especially Cheviots coming forward 44-48kg and too fat for export, and hardly heavy enough for cutting job. Many more lean export hoggs could be sold to advantage, although the best quality hoggs were the dearer trade seen for some time.
Sale topped at 292p for an oustanding pen of Beltex hoggs from Bridge House Farms with top price per head of £110 and £109 also for superb pens of Beltex from the same home. Sale averaged 172.3p (SQQ 177.7p).

A smaller show of 4,247 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers, with all classes £4-5 dearer on the week, although rams remain harder to sell. The best selling ewes remain short of requirements although the heaviest of ewes have saw a bigger rise over the last few weeks. Hill ewes remain hard to cash unless of sufficient size.
Sale topped at £152 for a pen of tremendous Texel ewes from first time consignor Seymour Farms, Wigton. Hill ewes topped at £71 for massive Blackface ewes from Messrs Browell, Quarry House. Rams sold to £116 for Texels from Messrs Acton, Bradley, Bardon Mill.
