Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 cattle, 4,605 prime hoggs and 2,695 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd March 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of OTM’s and cows where an entry of 18 head were forward.
Bruce Forster tops sale at 164p.
A mixed entry for type and quality met keen competition from a full ring of buyers. Bruce Forster’s consignment of non-fabbl cattle dominated with a young Limousin topping at 164p, other Limousin’s sold to 125p, with a British Blue x at 138p. Devon x cows sold to 123p from Ian Aitchison, with Black and Whites from Brian and Kevin at 114p top price per head was £1,043.75 from Bellfield.
More are urgently needed to supply demand, maximum commission £30 a head.
A smaller show of 4,555 prime hoggs; due to Wednesday’s adverse weather conditions, were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. All classes were significantly dearer on the week, especially export weight hoggs between 38-44kg. Too many hoggs 45-50kg and thick coming forward, lighter and leaner hoggs benefiting trade wise. The best quality hoggs saw the dearest trade of the season and remain keenly sought after, regularly selling between 250-300ppk. Lightweight hoggs dearer and short of buyer requirements today.
The sale topped at £155 and £154 for outstanding Texel ewe hoggs from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick. Top price per kilo was 318p and 293p for outstanding pens of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth, who’s consignment averaged £120 for 27 hoggs weighing 42kg and 280ppk.
Sale averaged 184.4p (SQQ 196.4p).

All classes dearer on the week and look set to remain so for the foreseeable future. Heavyweight ewes remain short of buyer requirements and many more needed to meet demand.
The sale topped at £159 and £158 for superb pens of Texel ewes from Messrs Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, and Chaseside Farms. Rams to £120 for Texels from Messrs Whittam, Dunnabie, Waterbeck.
