Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 cattle, 6,031 prime hoggs and 3,596 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th March 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of OTM’s and prime cattle where an entry of 18 head were forward. Buyers strength at ringside pushed trade dearer by 5p on the week. John Haynes topped the sucklers with a non-fabbl Simmental at 121p and Charolais to £925.75. Native breeds sold to 110p for an Angus from Messes Byers, with Whitebred Shorthorns to 105p from Gordon Jackson. Black and Whites were all parlour types and proved to be the trade of the day selling to 115p from “Nellie”, Harelawhole. Robert Carr was again in Longtown after a nine year break and was well pleased with his cows topping at 110p and commented on the excellent lunch he enjoyed in the canteen.
What have we to do to get a plentiful supply of clean in Longtown. Limousin heifers sold regularly around 220p, topping at 222p from Robert Fiddler.
A larger show of 6,031 prime hoggs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. Trade was slightly easier on the week owing to large numbers out throughout the country, especially heavy hoggs. Export weight hoggs and best quality hoggs still keenly sought after with the latter becoming scarcer every week. A larger show of lightweight hoggs saw them remain at last week’s fast trade. The sale topped at £123 for tremendous Beltex hoggs from Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth, who also sold the top price per kilo hoggs at 308p also for Beltex. His consignment of 40 hoggs averaged £115 and 271ppk.
Sale averaged 176.4p (SQQ 183.8p).

A larger show of 3,596 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers, with all classes again £4-5 dearer on the week, especially export type horned ewes. Many more required to meet demand during this sparse time. The sale topped at £158 for superb Texel ewes from Messrs Clark, Fineview, Glenluce. Rams to £147 for Texels from T & V Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield.
