Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 693 prime lambs, 2,569 prime hoggs and 2,836 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st June 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 24 cattle were forward. A full ring of buyers were present with a leading scotch operator at the beef ring leaving as a spectator, as the trade was electric.
OTM’s: Mrs James tops at 195p. All OTM’s average 142.75p per kilo.
Mrs James of Midtodhills topped the sale with her British Blue which realised 195p and grossed £1,608.75. Limousin from Tom Skyrme sold to 190p and realised £1,273. Dave The Man Baxter sold a white Charolais cow to 150p (£1,080) and the trailer load averaged 134p.
Bulls: Short numbers met a good trade to top at 202p from Dashwell Green.
Clean cattle: Whole sale averages 221.4p
Trade was simply flying with six bidders at ringside. Topping the sale at 227p was a red Limousin heifer from Drew and Brian, who also sold others to 225p. Charolais sold to 224p from Low Plains, with Blondes to 223p from Stuart and Tucker Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke. Heavyweight heifers realised £1,478.40 from Dashwell Green.
Farmers: The sale average at 57% equated to 388.42 p per kilo. Maximum commission £30 per head. Cheque available the following afternoon. WHY ARE WE NOT GETTING 70 CATTLE A WEEK?
A larger show of 693 spring lambs were forward, and met an exceptional trade especially for heavyweight lambs, selling to a top of 308p for excellent Texel lambs from Messrs Thompson, Woodhead and to £134 for Suffolks from Messrs Denby, Riddings Hill. Many more lambs could be and should be sold to take advantage of present high rates. Overall sale average 248.2p (SQQ 247.7p).

Another fine show of 2,836 prime hoggs were forward to a busy ring of buyers all keen for sheep, especially well fleshed hoggets, again heavyweight sheep were most in demand and short of requirements. Lesser tail end hoggs met realisation. The sale topped at £130 and £126 for Texel hoggs from Messrs Retson, Maidencots. Top price per kilo was 248p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Taylor, Heathery Hall. Overall sale average 199.1ppk (SQQ 199.3ppk).

A decent show of 2,836 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers. Heavy fat ewes easier on the week, as is the normal at this of time of year. Good lean selling ewes met recent high rates, whilst hill ewes and small ewes were a lot sharper and short of requirements. Rams remain steady. Sale topped at £153 for Charollais ewes from Beckfoot and Texel rams to £137 from Eastside.
