Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 cattle, 1,396 prime lambs, 2,061 prime hoggs and 2,097 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th June 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 34 head of cattle were forward, comprising of 20 OTM’s, 11 clean and 3 store bulls. Nine men operating at ringside ensured a flying trade throughout with numbers totally inadequate for buyer’s needs.
OTM’s: Dan Charnock’s Blue cow tops at 175p.
Trade simply flying, everything wanted and more needed on a weekly basis. Dan’s ten year old cow topped the sale at 175p, followed at 140p by David Baxter’s Charolais cow. Hill cows sold to 130p for a Shorthorn from Paul Bell, with Angus x to 131p from Mike Baxter. Dairy cows were an entry of working cows and topped at 123p for a Dairy Shorthorn from Messrs James, Midtodhills, with Guernsey’s to 104p from the same home. Top price per head was £1,198.75 from Hagg Farm.
Clean cattle: Sale averages 215.6p
Topping the sale was a terrific Blue heifer from Drew and Brian at 242p. Limousin heifers topped at 218p again from Dashwell Green. Shorthorn heifers sold to 214p from David Wilson, who also sold Limousin steers to 213p.
As previously said, more are needed. Maximum commission £30 per head.
A larger show of 1,396 spring lambs were forward to the usual busy ring of buyers who were all keen for sheep. An excellent show for quality was present with many heavyweight lambs on offer which remain scarce throughout the country, and selling regularly between £120-130. All other classes keenly sought after and remain very dear, with averages being 10p up on last week.
A top of 303p was achieved for outstanding Texel lambs from G Fleming, Netherbrotherstone and to £134 for Texels from Messrs Forsyth, Oswie and Gass & Martin, Aldery Terrace.

Another fine show of 2,061 prime hoggs were forward to a busy ring of buyers all keen for sheep, especially well fleshed hoggets. Again, heavyweight sheep were most in demand and short of requirements. Lesser tail end hoggs easier on the week, with flesh being a major requirement. Averages back 10p on the week, although best fleshed hoggs achieved recent high rates.
The sale topped at £128 and £124 for Texel hoggs from Messrs Little, North Greenhill, and to 236p per kilo also for Texels from Messrs Swanson, Clatequoy, Caithness.
Overall sale average 186.4ppk (SQQ 187.8ppk).

A smaller show of 2,097 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers, with all classes being dearer on the week, especially heavy ewes up between £5-8 so long as not over fat. Small hill type ewes, both export and plain, remain very short of buyer requirements and continue to sell at recent high rates. Rams remain consistent.
Sale topped at £158 for Texel ewes from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe and rams to £131 for Texels from Messrs Neill, Thornington.
