Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 26 cattle, 2,520 prime lambs, 293 prime hoggs and 2,837 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th June 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 26 cattle; 18 OTMs & 8 prime were forward.
OTM’s: Angus cows to £1217.20. 8 buyers trying to operate ringside, last week’s trade easily maintained. Everything wanted especially meat which was scarce with the majority of entries hard worked. The Caver’s twins fetched a tank of a cow which sold to 136p and realised £1217.20 to the farmers friend. Willy Telfer sold other Angus cows to 145p and £1167.25. Dairy bred Blue cows sold to 135p from George Dinnin. Hill sucklers from Messrs Urwin sold to 134p. Several buyers did not get to start operating due to lack of numbers. We could easily sell 40 every week.
Prime cattle: I tell you every week how good a trade we have. All heifers average 219.20p/kg. at 57% killing out this equates to 384.6p deadweight. Maximum commission £30 a head. Top price was 233p for Limousin from the Taylor boys.
Another large show of 2,520 spring lambs were forward to the usual busy ring of buyers all still keen for sheep albeit at a lesser trade in line with national trend, however the trade firmed all day as other auctions finished. Heavy weight lambs over 45kgs were in demand and were short of buyer requirements. Light weight lambs forward in larger numbers and would be the most back on the week. Vendors are advised to continue selling but to make sure all lambs drawn are well fleshed. A top of 283p was achieved for excellent Texel lambs from Messr Dean, Kirk House and to £124 for Texels from Ryan Roddan, Springfield. Overall sale average 215ppk (SQQ 215ppk)

The final show of the season saw 293 prime hoggs forward to the usual customers, with trade still fast for the best fleshed hoggs, others met realization. Hoggs will now be sold amongst the ewes without being mouthed from next week. The sale topped at £100 for a Texel hogg from Ryan Roddan, Springfield and to 187p per kilo for Texels from Messr Jeffereys, Kimmerston. Overall sale average 156ppk (SQQ 167ppk).

A smaller show of 2,837 cast ewes and rams was presented to a full compliment of buyer’s, all classes apart from the very plainest hill ewes easily maintained last weeks high rates. Many more could be sold to vendors advantage. Sale topped at £160 for Texel ewes from Messrs Sutherland, Carran, Caithness, who also sold top price ram at £148 for a Texel.
