Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 39 cattle, 2,067 prime lambs and 3,653 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th July 2017.
OTM’s: Minsca Shorthorns sell to £1204.
A mixed entry of OTM’s were offered to an extremely large company of buyers, there was a strong demand for all types with several accounts not able to start. The Connell family sold a terrific Beef Shorthorn topping the sale at 140p and averaging 134p. They also sold the top priced cow at £1204.
Dairy bred sold to 137p from Trevor & Ted Telford. Angus x cows sold to 130p from Messrs Anderson, Penchrise and 127p from Richard McKerrow.
Stock bulls sold to 119p (£1071) for a White Bred Shorthorn from Bell, The Bloch.
Clean: An entry containing all types from suckler bred limousins to dairy bred simmentals, Topping at 227p was a Limousin steer from Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green. Heifers topped at 210p from market regualars Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling, with heavy weights to £1339.80 from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield.
A smaller show of 2,067 spring lambs were forward due to the fact farmers have been drawing their lambs at lightweights for weeks now resulting in less lambs coming forward at present. The usual busy ring of buyers were all still keen for sheep with trade breaking the mid week trend and being 8p/kg up on the week. Heavy weight lambs over 45kgs were in demand and were short of buyer requirements. Light weight lambs continued to sell at recent rates. Vendors are advised to continue selling but to make sure all lambs drawn are well fleshed.
A top of 286p was achieved for excellent Texel lambs from Messrs Byrne, Thornthwaite Close and Messrs Mitchinson, High Greenhill and to £117 for Texels from Marygate. Overall sale average 222ppk (SQQ 222.9ppk)

A much larger show of 3,653 cast ewes and rams was presented to a full compliment of buyer’s, with one of the best shows of quality forward for many weeks, with all classes £5-8 dearer on the week especially for strong ewes. Hill ewes in smaller numbers today. Many more ewes could be sold to vendors advantage.
Sale topped at £162 for Texel ewes from Messrs Warden, Skelfhill. Rams topped at £152 for Charollais tups from Messrs Baxter, Moss Side.
