Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 2,386 prime lambs and 3,853 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th July 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 24 cattle comprising of 8 prime cattle and 16 OTM’s. Numbers were badly effected by several vendors deciding to shear or work in the grass.
OTM’s: Richard leads averages at 138p.
A large company of buyers at ringside easily handled the cows forward and as ever all classes were in demand. The majority of the cows forward were hill bred, and regularly sold between 95-125p per kilo. Richard and Pat Armstrong topped the sale with black Limousin crosses at 139p, and their trailer load averaged 138p. Hill Angus cows sold to 121p from Richard McKerrow, with travelled Galloway cows to 128p from Campbeltown.
Prime cattle: A short entry topped at 206p for a grass fed Limousin from David Wilson. Galloway cross steers sold to 204p from Richard and Pat. Young bulls sold to 178p from Messrs Hewson, Jerriestown.
Farmers: Maximum commission £30 per head.
A larger show of 2,386 spring lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade was slightly easier, especially for lightweight lambs as far more come on the market, however heavier well fleshed lambs remained sought after, with the best quality types short of requirements. Many more could be sold to advantage. A top of 282p was achieved for excellent Texel lambs from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft and to £129 for Texels from Messrs Ralston, Rhoin, Campbeltown. Overall sale average 218.5ppk (SQQ 218.8ppk).

Another large show of 3,853 cast ewes and rams was presented to a full compliment of buyer’s. All classes in strong demand, especially heavy ewes which were short of requirements. The biggest rise would be realised amongst the mule ewes and the strongest end of the horned ewes, which showed a rise of £9 on the week. Sale topped at £154 for Texel ewes from A Hamilton, Smyllum. Rams topped at £150 for a Texel from Viewley.
