Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 22 cattle, 3,516 prime lambs and 6,437 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 24th August 2017.
The company held its weekly sale of primestock where an entry of 22 cattle was forward, comprising of 17 OTM’s and 5 prime cattle.
OTM’s: Harry & Geoff’s trailer load average 171.5p
A mixed entry for quality with several animals showing the weather, but all classes in demand and were well in front of vendors expectations. A tremendous trailer load of cows from the Gass family topped the sale at 177p for a Limousin x which grossed £1203.64. Blue x cows from Nunscleugh realised £1104. Red sucklers sold to 138p from Tom Cowan, with hill Angus to 117p from Richard McKerrow. Increased numbers of Black & Whites met a tremendous trade topping at 131p from Nellie Imrie. All dairy cows averaged 112p, with the sale averaging 120.8p.
Prime cattle: An entry of slaughter only cattle topped at 179p for a dairy bred bull from Jerriestown, who’s trailer load averaged 170p.
As ever, more cattle need to supply a growing buyer demand and remember maximum commission £30 per head.
A similar entry of 3,516 prime lambs on week, buyers were extra keen for supplies and demand was very strong with averages unchanged at 190p overall. Numbers very short of buyer’s requirements. Top price per kilo was 270p Beltex’s from Messrs Milburn, Wallend, Greenhead, with the top end selling between 220-240p per kilo. Ordinary good meat lambs making 185p-205p per kilo. Top price per head was £125 for Suffolk lambs from Messrs Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan. Lightweights also were good to sell, with good meat Continentals and Blackface’s around 180p-200p per kilo. Top was 221p for Beltex from Messrs Retson, Maidencots, Abington and top price per head was £70.80 from the same home.

Another very large show of 6,437 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual full ring of buyers, all very keen to purchase, as a result all classes easily maintained recent high rates. Top of £149 for Texel ewes from J Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso. Hill ewes to £78 for Cheviots from Messrs Campbell, Wedderlie, Gordon and cast rams to £150 for Texels from Chaseside.
