Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 2,970 prime lambs and 4,728 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th September 2017.
A total of 24 cattle was forward and saw trade very dear for all classes and many more could have been easily sold. Cows peaked at 161p for a black British Blue x cow sold by JP Lee, Morley Hill. Messrs Lee’s run of cows averaged £1,100.50. Limousin’s topped at 157p from Morley Hills. Charolais to 147 sold by Messrs Ritson, Swaites. Galloway cows topped at 130p from Peela Hill and regularly sold between 120-130p. Black and white cows sold to 130p from TB Imrie, Harelawhole followed at 127p from CT & J Wigham & Sons, Hethermill.

A much smaller show of 2,970 prime lambs were forward following this week’s lull in the trade. A large volume of lightweight hill lambs realised little more than store trade, which affected the overall average. However, the best quality lambs remained very dear and regularly sold between 220-240p, with export lambs and heavier lambs firmer then mid week. Sale topped at 251p for tremendous Beltex from regular and local consignor David Hall, Lanerton, Brampton. Top price per head of £103 for large Texel tup lambs from Messrs Milburn, Wallend, Brampton. Overall sale average 173.4p (SQQ 173p).

Another good show of 4,728 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual full ring of buyers, with heavy ewes slightly easier on the week especially mules but the best end of ewes remained at recent high rates. Hill ewes shadowed last week’s trade. Rams easier. Sale topped at £190 for outstanding Texel rams from A R Bell, Kirkton, Hawick. Ewes to £140 for a pen of quality Texel ewes from Messrs Renwick, Craig Douglas, Selkirk.
