Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 cattle, 4,554 prime lambs and 5,164 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th November 2017.
34 cattle forward comprising of 10 clean cattle and 24 cast cows, again the cast cow section was dominated with plainer hill cows and no cows with any real meat, but nevertheless trade was brisk and more could have been sold. Top price was 168p for a Non-Farm Assured Blue Grey sold by J G Smith, Sark Tower, with Luing cows selling to 125p from W Wilson, Geltsdale. Angus stock bulls sold to 123p shown by Tanlawhill Farming.
Clean cattle sold well, and the best end keenly sought after, but more quality needed to satisfy demand. The sale topped at 231p for a British Blue heifer sold by J&J&D Taylor, Englishtown with Limousin’s to 220p also from Messrs Taylor.

A larger entry of 4,554 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with all classes again meeting a good trade despite earlier lapses mid-week. Best quality lambs remain very dear and short of buyer requirements. Heavyweight and export lambs maintained last week’s high rates, although in the light lamb section up to 32kg dearer so long as fleshed, however 32-39kg slightly easier on the week, especially if lean.
Sale topped at 263p for a pen of wonderful Beltex lambs from J Oliver & Sons, Waltonwoodhead, Brampton. Top price per head of £104 for a pen of wonderful Beltex lambs from M & W Fotheringham, Drumcairn, Perth. Overall sale average 174.1p (SQQ 175.6p).

Another large show of 5,164 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with averages similar on the week, although the biggest and best ewes were sharper. Mule ewes would be a few pounds easier. However, well fleshed export type ewes were £4-5 sharper, with plain ewes similar. Rams less in numbers but dearer on week.
Sale topped at £148 for tremendous Texel ewes from G J Toppin, Bascodyke Foot, Ainstable. Rams to £144 for Texel’s from M Watson, Four o Boot, Carlisle.
