Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,821 prime lambs and 4,767 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st December 2017.
A small selection of cattle saw cast cows top at £711 for a Dutch black and white cow shown from T & M Irving, Becton Hall and clean cattle sold to 220p twice for Limousin heifers sold by J W Vevers, High Stenries, with a top price per head of £1,397.
A smaller entry of 3,821 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, who unexpectedly created a very strong trade in all classes which rose continually all day, apart from lambs which lacked flesh especially in the lightweight category. Many more could have been sold to advantage and it will remain to be seen the amount of volume which comes on the market on Wednesday as to whether the trade will remain for next week.
The sale topped at 250p for a pen of wonderful Beltex lambs from T Linton, The Firs, Lanark with top price per head peaking at £130 for outstanding Texel lambs from A Hamilton, Smyllum Road, Lanark.
Overall sale average 188.2p (SQQ 187.5p).

A larger show of 4,767 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with the heavy and best end of ewes dearer and short of requirements as well as the plainest ewes being dearer. However, the main stumbling block is the vast volume of export type ewes on the market which look remarkably cheap compared to the plainest end. An excellent show of Hexham type Blackface ewes met a fast trade resulting in a larger average on paper for light ewes, however in reality they were no dearer.
Sale topped at £168 for wonderful Texel ewes from Messrs Hastings, Kilncroft, Dumfries. Hill ewes to £71 for Blackface from Messrs Browell, Quarry House, Hexham. Rams sold to £130 for a Texel from Eastside.
