Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,342 prime lambs, 666 store lambs and 3,727 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th December 2017.
A small gathering of 666 store lambs were also sold today, with all classes keenly sought after even though not the best show for quality. The sale topped at £70 for outstanding Texel’s from Ericstane. Cheviots to £45 and £40 Broom Park. Texels to £70, £66 Ericstane. Mules to £54 Drumelzier and £48 Wester Dawyck. Blackface to £44, £37 Carterhope, £31 Drumelzier, £30 Penchrise. North Country Cheviots to £64 Ericstane.
A large entry of 5,342 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with all classes of lambs extremely dear and sought after, apart from the lightest end of small lambs. Trade would be up some 12p on the week across the board. The sale topped at 279p for a wonderful Beltex lamb from T Story, Greenburn, Canonbie with top price per head peaking at £119 for outstanding Texel lambs from R Ferguson, Priory Nook, Carlisle.
Overall sale average 199.6p (SQQ 200p).

A smaller show of 3,727 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with heavy ewes and best quality ewes dearer and well short of reequipments. Plain ewes were sharper although export weight ewes again remain hard to cash in comparison. Rams similar.
Sale topped at £156 for wonderful Texel ewes from Messrs Hastings, Kilncroft, Dumfries and from A Graham, The Wreay, Wigton. Hill ewes to £69 for Blackface from Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham. Rams sold to £126 for a Texel from Viewley.
