Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 4,386 prime hoggs and 5,356 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 22nd February 2018.

A total of 24 cattle was forward with a mixed selection of cows, which saw trade again sharper and short of requirements. The sale toped at 140p twice, firstly for a Limousin cow shown by The Lamperts then again for an Angus cow which also topped the gross price per head at £1,281 from TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill. A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill sold a pair of Limousin cows each making 138p.

Prime cattle again very dear with numbers tight and more needed for next week. The sale topped at 231p for a medium weight Limousin bullock sold by A & WJ Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green. Heavyweight Limousin heifers topped at 226p and 224p shown by A E Fawkes & Sons, Welton Farm and heavyweight bullocks selling to 223p from Dashwell Green. Top price per head of £1,744 and £1,632 again sold by Messrs Taylor, with heifers peaking at £1,525 and £1,512 from Messrs Fawkes.

A smaller entry of 4,386 prime hoggs met an exceptional trade with all classes selling very well and short of requirements. Overall sale average 213.5p (SQQ 215.8p). Beltex and the best Texel hoggs all sold between 250p to 280p and to a top of 350p for Texel tup hoggs from Messrs Scott, Falla, Jedburgh, others to 321p for Beltex from Easter Ochermuthill.

Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth consignment of 35 hoggs averaged 291.3p and £120.21 per head.

Heavy hoggs again very dear with several pens making over the £120 mark and sold to a top of £142 and £140 for Texels from Falla, Beltex to £125 from The Fitz and Suffolks also to £125 from Kirkhouse.

Commercial hoggs of all breeds sold between 215p-230p per kilo.

Light hoggs also sold extremely well with most making between 210p-220p per kilo and to a top of 259p for Beltex from Messrs Kennedy, Lurgan, Aberfeldy.

A larger entry of 5,356 cast ewes and rams forward attracted the usual large ring of buyers. Trade was again very dear with the exception of lean ewes which were harder to sell. 589 ewes sold over £100, averaged £115.83 and to a top of £159 for Texels from Heatherglen, followed at £149 from Sanderson House. Light ewes to £76 for Blackface from Nunnerie. Rams topped at £125 for Texels from Crawthat.
