Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 34 cattle, 4,500 prime hoggs and 4,110 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th March 2018.
12 cast cows and 22 prime cattle were forward, cast cows were mainly leaner types but sold very well and topped at 142p for a Charolais cow sold by Messrs Baxter, Moss Side.
A good selection of prime cattle with most cattle weighing 650-700kg and a shortage of handy weights, but trade was very strong and many more could have been sold. The sale topped at 242p for a British Blue heifer shown by J&J&D Taylor, Englishtown, with Limousin heifers selling to 237p twice also from Englishtown. Limousin steers peaked at 230p from A&WJ Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green. Top price per head was £1,605.45 for a Limousin heifer sold by Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling, closely followed at £1,603 also for a Limousin heifer, this time from AE Fawkes & Sons, Welton Farm.

4,500 prime hoggs were forward and met a solid selling trade with last weeks high average easily maintained again. The best meat was very good to sell. Beltex and Texel pure bred hoggs met an animated demand and were far short of buyer’s requirements, with a top of 319p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs McKie, Finnieness, Castle Douglas, with others to 315p from Messrs Fotheringham, Drumcairn, Perth. Overall sale average 219.1p (SQQ 220.3p)
Heavy hoggs were another flyer, with many pens selling over £130 per head and to a top of £135.50 for Texel hoggs from Mr Storey, New Hummerbecks, Co Durham.
Light hoggs again a very good trade with many pens in the 220-230p per kilo bracket. Top price per kilo was 253p from New Hummerbecks.
Also, today we held the Annual Show and Sale of prime Blackface hoggs which was kindly sponsored by The Scottish Farmer and ably judged by Mr James Gittins, who awarded the Championship to a wonderful pen of 20 from regular supporters Messrs Simpson, Kirkhouse, Peebles, which scaled 44kg and sold at £106 to the judge.

4,110 cast ewes and rams forward, with numbers up 1,000 on the week. Buyers strong for numbers with trade the best for a very long time being up £10 per head on the week and far short of buyer requirements. Top was £181 for Texel ewes from Bryndansi, with 899 ewes selling at £100 or over, to average £121.57.
Best Greyface ewes sold between £100-£110 and to a top of £139 from Hillend. Also, North Country Cheviots sold to £138 from Hazelgill and £129 Stobshiel Mains. Best Blackface sold well, over £70-£80 with a top of £85 from Woodhall. Rams to £159 for Charollais from Heatherglen.
