Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 cattle, 32 spring lambs, 2,123 prime hoggs and 2,766 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19th April 2018.

A smaller entry of 18 cattle meant jobs were left short of requirements. Cast cows topped at 136p for an Angus cow sold by Messrs Byers, Cubby Hill, with British Blue cows from CA Grieve & Son, Snab selling to 130p twice. Galloway stock bulls sold to 130p from J Thornton, East Murton. Top price per head was £1,149.20 from Messrs Byers, Cubby Hill. Clean cattle in demand but short of requirements. Top price of 230p for a heavyweight Limousin heifer sold by Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling. Top price per head was £1,5,18 also from Messrs Fiddler for a heifer.

Spring lambs were a similar show with trade again very god. Top price per kilo was 300p for Suffolks from Burgh Head and to £148 and £144 per head from Beechgrove, others to £143 The Lands.

A smaller entry of 2,123 prime hoggs on the week saw trade considerably dearer than earlier in the week. Overall sale average of 239.3p (SQQ 234.5p). Top price of 323p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth, with the majority of good meat export hoggs selling between 250 to 275p per kilo. Heavy hoggs again met a very strong trade with many pens between £150 to £160 per head and topped at £163 for Texel hoggs from WJ & JG Bell, Kinninghall, Hawick. Light hoggs also met a much stronger demand than expected with good meat making between 225-250p per kilo.

On the day, many more sheep could have been sold to vendors advantage.

All classes again proved good to sell, with over 826 heavy ewes averaging £119.32 and to a top of £152 for Texel ewes from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Castle Douglas. Hill ewes to £79 for Blackface from J & A McCreath, Boat Croft, Castle Douglas and rams to £150 for North Country Cheviots from R King & Son, Gospel Hall, Jedburgh.
