Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10 cattle, 3,912 prime lambs and 7,587 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th August 2018.

A small show of cattle was forward although continue to sell at a competitive trade with plenty buyers operating and looking for cows. Sale topped at 165p and 160p for Belted Galloways from Hoscote Estate, Hawick with Angus cows to 123p from Messrs Anderson, Penchrise, Hawick.

A similar show of 3,912 quality prime lambs met a much better trade than anticipated to average 185p overall, which was in line with most other marts since Tuesday. Export lambs regularly sold between 200-230p per kilo to a top of 247p for Texel lambs from G Mitchinson & Sons, High Greenhill, Brampton and to £105 for Texel lambs from TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill, Longtown, with lambs from 43kg upwards again the easiest to sell.

Lightweights were also in demand and sold to a top of £70 for 30kg Texel lambs from Troloss Farms, Biggar.

7,591 cast ewes and rams were another large entry with the usual buyers present. Trade would be slightly easier from last week’s extreme rates because buyers have bought up as the Muslim feast looms nearer. Top price of £150 for Texel ewes from PG Perring & Son, Hoprig, Berwick with hill ewes to £68 for Blackface ewes from WJ & D Longlands, Rusheylaw, Hexham and for Cheviot ewes from L M Laing, Tarrasfoot, Langholm. Texel rams to £118 from Fearn Farm.
