Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 cattle, 2,763 prime lambs and 4,041 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th August 2018.

More cows forward and plenty of demand for all classes. The sale topped at 129p on two occasions, firstly for an Angus cow shown by Messes McKerrow, Darlawhills and then for a British Blue x cow from A Roskell, Laverhay, Moffat. Black & whites to 125p from T B Imrie, Harelawhole, Canonbie.

2,763 prime lambs were a larger entry and of better quality which returned an SQQ average of 190p (overall 188.5p) and to a top of 257p for Texels from S Stoddart, Hillside, Wigton, with many pens of quality lambs selling over 200p per kilo. Lambs over 43kg again proved best to sell with a top price per head of £126 again from Hillside and selling to MJ Wharton, Blackbrow, Wigton.

Greyface (Mule) lambs sold to £94 for A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill, Bewcastle and to 194p from Mr Maxwell-Stuart, Baitlaws, Biggar.

4,041 cast ewes and rams were a larger entry. Buyers much keener for supplies and for all classes, therefore much dearer on the week. Heavy ewes sold to £160 for Texels from Beckfoot, and 497 ewes selling over £100 to average £116.20. Hill ewes to £80 for Cheviot ewes from R & A Whittam, Dunnabie, Lockerbie. Rams to £132 for Charollais from Beckfoot.
