Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 16 cattle, 3,025 prime lambs and 6,096 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st November 2018.\

A similar entry of cows forward with mainly plainer sorts on offer. Sale topped at 107p on two occasions, firstly for a Simmental cow shown by Janice Pattie, Butterdales, Eastriggs then for a Beef Shorthorn from Tanlawhill Farming, Langholm.

3,025 prime lambs were a similar entry and a much better quality show. 3 new buyers were present for lambs which meant that 14 active buyers were operating. All buyers very keen for supplies, as a result all weights much dearer. Overall sale average of 170p (SQQ 177.5p), a rise of 10p on the week. Heavy overfat lambs however were again hard to sell. Lambs 32-39kg in short supply averaging a massive 184.5p, many more of these could be sold to vendors advantage.

Top price per kilo of 273p for fantastic Beltex lambs from DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth with several other pens selling between 220-230p per kilo, and many buyers actively seeking these best quality export weight lambs with more required and can be marketed to advantage. Top price per head of £114 for Texels from J Oliver & Sons, Waltonwoodhead, Brampton.

6,096 cast ewes and rams were a large show and with several extra buyers present, trade very similar on the week for heavy ewes, but all breeds of hill ewes much dearer on the week and to a top of £70 for Blackface ewes from J Hunter & Sons, The Steel, Hexham. Best Pure Texel ewes again very dear and to a top of £155 from B Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle. Rams to £124 for a Beltex from JF Latimer, Chapel House, Gilsland.
