Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 40 cattle, 4,406 prime lambs and 4,331 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 15^th November 2018.

An increased show of cast cows sold to a ring full of purchasers ensuring all classes maintaining last week’s extreme rates of returns. Topping the sale was a well fleshed British Blue consigned by regular vendors J.P. Lee, Morley Hill, Whitfield, Hexham realising 151ppk & £1132.50. More cows required on a weekly basis.

4,406 prime lambs, a similar show of better quality, but unfortunately the market was full of heavy and over fat lambs. Overall average was 168p (SQQ 178p), which was similar on the week. Top price per head was £103 for Beltex from J.L. McMillian, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart. Export weights again sold to a premium, with many pens between 200p and 240p per kilo, to a top of 246p for Beltex again from J.L. McMillian, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart. Commercial handy weight lambs sold between 180p and 200p per kilo. Mule lambs sold to £78.50 E. & T.N. Ballantyne, Cowburnrigg, Haltwhistle. Blackface to £69 from J.R.F. Pattinson & Son, Hot Bank, Bardon Mill. Light lambs were scarce for the demand and sold to 172p for Herdwicks from Boldron.

4,331 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual large company of buyers serving all outlets of the UK. Again, pure Texel and Beltex ewes sold at premium and were short of demand. Sale topped at £156 for Texels from Snow Top. Light ewes to £82 for Goats from Bordergate. With rams to £138 for Texels from R. & J. Lines, Killocraw, Argyll. 361 heavy ewes sold over £100 to average £121.91 overall.
