Longtown Christmas Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 32 cattle, 4,196 prime lambs and 5,472 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6^thDecember 2018.

32 cast cows and prime cattle were forward for the Christmas Primestock Show and Sale where an excellent show of cattle was offered to the judge Mr Jimmy Robertson, Borders, who after much consideration he awarded the Championship to a Limousin heifer shown by AE Fawkes & Son, Welton Farm, with the heifer scaling 570kg and selling at 255p (£1,453) to Border Meats, Lockerbie.

Champion

The Reserve Champion went to WG & HM Kyle, Spoutbank for their first prize native bred Blue Grey bullock selling for 202p being purchased by the judge.

An improved entry of cast cows met a nice trade with a top price of 159p for the 1^st prize cow, a British Blue shown by A Roskell & Partners, Laverhay, Wamphray with others to 135p for the 2^nd prize cow, a Limousin from Messrs D & I Mackintosh, Kirkton of Kingoldrum, Angus. Top price per head of £1,327 from Laverhay.

The Christmas Show and Sale of prime lambs attracted an entry of 4,196, which included 45 pens of ten lambs for the show. Judging was in the very capable hands of regular buyer Mr James Gittins, Welshpool, who carried out his task with expertise and was kindly sponsored by Murray Farmcare Animal Health. The Championship was awarded to the 1^stprize pen of Beltex lambs from regular supporter Mr R Lines, Killocraw, Bellochantuy, Campbeltown Argyll which scaled at 43kg and realised £138 selling to West Scottish Lamb.

Champion

The Reserve Championship went to another pen of Beltex, again from a regular vendor DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth which scaled 40kg realising £122 and selling to Farmers Fresh.

Out with the show, Beltex lambs sold to a top of 275p from A & A Little, Hollands, Penton with top price per head peaking at £110 also from Hollands.

Trade was very strong from start to finish with light, standard and export lambs very dear with an SQQ average of 191p, and an overall average of 183p. Heavy lambs would be dearer also. Light lambs were a flyer selling to £59.50 for 32kg Cheviot lambs.

Another large show of 5,472 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual buyers. Trade for hill ewes were considerably dearer and again pure Texel and Beltex ewes very dear, with Greyface ewes very similar on the week. 384 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £124.32 and to a top of £155 for Texel ewes from Aton and Lochside Cottage. Hill ewes to £70 for Blackface from Newbigging and Texel rams to £122 from Lossit, Campbeltown.
