Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 30 cast cows, 4,811 prime hoggs and 5,229 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14^th February 2019.

A larger entry of cast cows was forward with a large proportion being hill cows. Sale topped at 122p for a Limousin cow shown by Devonport Farms, Blakelaw, Hexham. Simmental cows to 118p from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie, who also sold Angus cows at 112p. Top price per head of £799 and £781 for Limousins from Devonport Farms.

The 4,811 prime hoggs were presented to 17 buyers. Probably the largest ring of buyers in the Country. Again a nice quality entry including many pens of pure Beltex and Texel hoggs, these being very dear selling to a top of 303p for Beltex hoggs from DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth. Commercial hoggs sold around or over the 200p per kilo mark.

Another outstanding show of heavy hoggs sold between £90 to £110 per head with a top of £122 again for Beltex hoggs shown by Messrs Taylor, Perth. Suffolks sold to £104 from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries with Greyface hoggs to £90 from R Crichton, Nether Locharwoods, Dumfries. Blackface hoggs sold to £85 from JE Carruthers, Silloans, Otterburn and Cheviots to £95 from J Maxwell & Son, Halket Leaths, Castle Douglas.

Light hoggs again good to sell and around the 200p per kilo mark and to a top of 268p and £83 for Beltex hoggs shown by DG Cunningham, Walkerdyke, Lanark.

Overall average very similar on the week at 191.2p (SQQ 199.2p).

Again, a large entry of 5,229 cast ewes and rams attracted sixteen buyers from all areas. Trade was buoyant throughout with trade very similar on the week. 482 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £120.26.

Top of £159 and £158 for Texel ewes from G Wilkinson, Arkleby House, Wigton closely followed by Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton at £157.  Suffolk ewes sold to £138 from Ross Farm Co Ltd, Wester Middleton and Greyfaces to £85 from Almagill. Light ewes to £70 for Cheviots from Aton with Texel rams to £130 from Messrs Gass & Martin, Aldery Terrace, Canonbie.
