Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,571 prime hoggs and 4,382 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th March 2019.
Cast cows again a selling at a sharper trade with more required on a weekly basis. Charolais heifers to 198p (£1,336) from BE Davidson, Bellsfield, Longtown. Limousin cows sold to 133p and 130p shown by JP Lee, Morley Hill and to 120p from S Dalton, Greenside. Beef Shorthorns selling to 119p and 115p from JDM Thomson, Newlands. Top price cow per head was £1,110.55 from Morley Hill.
5,571 prime hoggs were another large entry with the usual buyers operating. Trade again sharp throughout to average 186.7p (SQQ 198.8p).
Again, many good pens of Beltex and Texel hoggs forward with prices again at a premium making between 240-280p per kilo and topping at 315p for Beltex hoggs from DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth with others to 313p from J Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Crieff, who’s run of hoggs averaged 289p and £123.64.
Commercial hoggs all sold around 200-210p per kilo with 38-41kg in the strongest demand.
Another super show of 2,258 of heavy hoggs; which was nearly half the sale, all sold mainly between £82-£90 and to a top of £125 again for Beltex hoggs from Cuiltburn, Crieff, closely followed at £123 from Messrs Taylor, Perth.
Suffolk hoggs sold to £91.50 from Auchengray and Greyfaces to £92 from Hilltop.
Light hoggs again very good to sell with all good meat hoggs making around the 200p per kilo mark. Top price of 200p (£64) for 32kg Texel hoggs shown by DG Cunningham, Walkerdyke, Lanark.
Also, today was the Annual Show and Sale of Prime Hill and North Country Cheviot hoggs in conjunction with the South Country Sheep Society, kindly sponsored by PJ Tractor Parts, Longtown and ably judged by Mr B MacTaggart, who awarded the Hill Cheviot Championship to the Firm of NB Conaghan, West Scales, Gretna with a pen scaling 45kg and realising £100 to West Scottish Lamb, Carlisle and the Reserve from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm weighing 39kg and making £84. The North Country Cheviot Championship was awarded to Messrs Walker, Raeburnfoot, Eskdalemuir who’s hoggs weighed 45kg and made £90 to B MacTaggart.

The 4,354 cast ewes and rams attracted many buyers, with trade the best of the season and all classes £7 per head dearer. Hill ewes saw the biggest rise overall. Sale average £73.80, with 414 ewes selling upwards of £100 to average £120.12.
Best Continental ewes again an exceptional trade and to a top of £167 for Texel ewes from RD Fleming, Hillhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming, closely followed at £166 for Texels from KD & DE Millar & Partners, Crookholm, Canonbie. Suffolks ewes sold to £125 from The Land, with Greyface ewes to £80 from Gartvaigh & Sceugh Dyke and North Country Cheviots to £94 from Blybster, Caithness.
Hill ewes sold to £76 for Cheviots from J Halliday & Sons, Springwells, Lockerbie and rams to £110 for Texels from W & JW Mews, Glendue, Hexham.
