Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,302 prime hoggs and 2,919 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11^th April 2019.

Cast cows again sold at a brisk trade, with all classes in demand. More required on a weekly basis. Sale topped at 127p for a British Blue from Cowden Partners, Cowden Burn with Limousin cows to 121p from E & D Barker, Palmer Hill. Top price per head of £958 from Cowden.

A large entry of 6,302 prime hoggs from all over the country, met fantastic demand with the 25kg – 45kg weights, in particular, a very strong trade. An SQQ of 218.1p and 205.8p overall, including 2,400+ heavy sheep is a great result.

Sale topped at 300p per kilo for Beltex hoggs from D & D Aitken, Uppercleuch, Lockerbie with top price per head of £130 being achieved again for Beltex hoggs this time from N J McQuiston, High Airyolland, Newton Stewart. Suffolks to £105.50 Pastures View, North Cheviots to £100 West Scales and Mule hoggs sold to £96 from Tangytavil, Campbeltown.

A great show of Blackies and Hill Cheviot’s were forward with Blackies to £98.50 Craigdarroch and a whopping 271p Cara View with Cheviots also to £98.50 Aucharua and 248p Maidencots.

Lightweight hoggs sold to 261p for 31kg (£81) Texel hoggs shown by Messrs Barrow, Powheads, Wigton.

The first spring lambs of the season were forward from The Lands and realised £104 for 54kg Suffolks

A larger entry of 2,919 cast ewes and rams saw the usual full ring of buyers saw similar on the week again with the best Beltex and Texels very dear, as was strong Blackface ewes. Texel ewes sold to £168 from Marygate. Suffolks to £120 from Burgh Head, Greyfaces to £91 Golden Lane and North Country Cheviots to £106 High Moat. Hill ewes to £81 for Cheviots from A Armour, Lossit Home Farm, Campbeltown with rams selling to £128 for a Charollais from SJ & ME Bell, Mill Cottage, Waterbeck.
