Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 prime lambs, 4,909 prime hoggs and 2,970 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd May 2019.
Cast cows again sold well to a stronger ringside of buyers with prices exceeding recent rates. More are required to satisfy weekly demand. Sale topped at 143p for a Limousin cow from H.L. Whitfield, Batey Shield, Kellah. Closely followed by a Whitebred Shorthorn cast bull at 142p from John M Davidson, East Deloraine, Ettrick which totaled £1072.10. Beef Shorthorns to 128p Hallsford. Limousins to 143p, 137p, 136p Batey Shield.
A larger show of 4,909 prime hoggs, buyers more cautious, although good quality of any weights very good to sell. Overall average 201p with SQQ at 208.7p.
Best quality Beltex and Texel sold to 258p for a pen of Beltex from Snade, Dunscore, with others to 243p from Kirtlebank.
Export weights sold between 210p to 230p per kilo with Hill Cheviots to £102 from Netherplace. Blackfaces to £91 from Yett.
Light hoggs again a marvellous trade to a top of 243p for Cheviots from Cleughbrae with most making between 200 to 225p. Top price per head was £78 again for Cheviots from Cleughbrae.
Heavy hoggs were forward in less numbers and sold at similar rates. Top £113 for Texel hoggs from Becks, Langholm.

The 2,970 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual buyers, trade very similar with lean and best Texels at extreme rates. 436 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £118.36. Overall average £80.77. Sale topped at £160 for Texels from Chaseside, with Suffolks selling to £112 from Shaw Cottage, Charollais to £133 from Beckfoot, Greyface ewes to £88 from Woodhead.
Hill ewes sold to a top of £86 for Cheviots from Crossdykes, with Blackfaces to £76 from Mossband House.
Cast rams sold to a top of £132 for Texels from Barledziew Cottage.
