Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,438 sheep comprising of 2,716 prime lambs and 5,722 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th July 2019.
Another good entry of cast cows again continued to sell at recent high rates with all vendors pleased with returns. Many more required on a weekly basis to meet demand. Sale topped at £1,196 for an Angus bull shown by J & F Earnshaw, Achamore, Campbeltown with Angus cows selling to 122p from Messrs McKerrow, Darlawhills, Lockerbie and Black & Whites to 132p from Hewson Bros., Jerriestown, Carlisle.
Another super show of 2,716 prime lambs attracted extra buyers. Trade was buoyant from start to finish however, in general lambs would be easier on the week to average 181.6p overall (SQQ 182.2p).
Heavy lambs were again the best trade with export weight lambs seeing many pens over 200p per kilo. Lightweights again a strong trade.
Top price per kilo of 250p for Beltex lambs shown by CJ McWhirter, Banks Farm, Bankshill and top price per head of £100 also for Beltex lambs from Banks Farm.

The 5,722 cast ewes and rams were a much larger show with all the usual buyers present. Trade easily upheld last weeks very high rates to average £73.34 overall. There was a great show of heavy ewes with 471 ewes selling over £100 to average £121.22.
Top price of £164 for Texel ewes shown by A & H McColm, Crailloch, Port William, with hill ewes to £74 for Cheviots from IHG Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick and Texel rams selling to £120 from D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie.
