Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,531 sheep comprising of 3,668 prime lambs and 4,863 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th October 2019.

All classes of cast cows sold to a brisk trade with extra buyers in attendance. More required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. Sale topped at 108p for British Blue cows from I & G Aitchison, The Side, Newcastleton and for Angus cows shown by R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg, Bewcastle. Top price per head of £928 from Border Rigg.

3,668 prime lambs were a similar show on the week. Trade saw export and well finished lambs easy to sell with half meat lambs proving harder to sell.

Overall average 157.6p (SQQ 161.5p)

Export weights to a top of 226p and 224p for Beltex lambs shown by G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck, with commercial lambs 155-165p per kilo.

Heavy lambs were forward in much greater numbers where trade would be as good as expected, and mostly making 150-155p. Top price per head £96.50 and £95 also for Beltex lambs from Crawthat.

Light lambs were in short supply with all good meat 160-170p.

A large show of 4,863 cast ewes and rams were forward and attracted the usual full ring of buyers. All classes in great demand and selling to a top of £178 for Texel ewes from R & MG Elliott & Sons, Hallburn Croft, Longtown. Hill ewes to £58 for Cheviots from Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk and JJ Paterson, Terrona, Langholm. Rams to £118 for Texels shown by CD Scott, Falla, Jedburgh.

Both Beltex and Texel ewes sold at a premium and were very short of requirements. Feeding ewes of all breeds sold at very high rates.

265 ewes sold at £100 plus to average £123.77 with an overall average of £57.69.
