Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,886 sheep comprising of 5,720 prime lambs and 4,166 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19^th December 2019.

A small entry of cast cows again sold at recent rates with more required to fulfil demand. Sale topped at 118p for a Galloway from Eskdale & Liddesdale Farming, Blackburn, Newcastleton with Bazadaise cows to 113p from TN & F Cowan, The Ash, Roadhead.

A similar entry of 5,720 prime lambs also met the best trade of the season with an overall average of 212.9p, which would be a rise of 22p on the week. SQQ average 217.5p

Strong demand for all weights all day with export weights selling to a top of 308p for Beltex lambs from J Oliver & Sons, Waltonwoodhead, Brampton.

Heavy lambs were 36% of the entry and the majority selling over £100. The sale topped at £132 for Beltex lambs from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.

Commercial lambs all sold between 200-220p per kilo and light lambs were another strong trade for all breeds which were good meat.

The 4,166 cast ewes and rams were a similar entry on the week, with extra big gun buyers present, all classes sold at extreme demand and at the highest rates so far. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

954 ewes sold at £100 and overall to average £122.62 and an overall average of £86.24.

The sale topped at £179 for Texel ewes from K & G Aitken, Jenny Mill Stables, Brydekirk with hill ewes selling to £58 for Cheviot ewes from Clints Farming, Crookston, Mid Lothian. Texel rams to £140 from WH & DA Gass, Nunscleugh, Bewcastle.
