Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,421 sheep comprising of 1,243 prime hoggs, 823 prime lambs and 1,355 cast ewes & rams plus 23 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th May 2020.

A great entry of cast cows for both quality and quantity saw all classes in demand and easily maintaining recent high rates, with more required on a weekly basis to meet requirements. The sale topped at £1,184 for a Limousin cow from G Famelton, Horseholm, Gilsland with Angus cows selling to £1,099 from T Blackwood & Son, Midtown, Lanark. Limousin bulls to 204p from J Robertson & Son, Becks, Langholm, who also sold Galloways at 154p and 152p.

Another large show of 823 spring lambs were forward to an increased ring of purchasers. Topping the sale was a fantastic pen of Beltex lambs realising 316p consigned from Gelston Castle Farms, Castle Douglas with a top price per head of £131 for another outstanding penful of Beltex lambs shown by I Donaldson, Ashton, Lockerbie.

Many more lambs are required on a weekly basis to satisfy purchaser demands here at Longtown.

The sale topped at 245p for Texel hoggs from JT & EM Marrs & Son, Broomhills, Carlisle with a top price per head of £126 for Texel hoggs shown by WJ & JG Bell, Kinninghall, Hawick.

Lean hoggs proving difficult to cash whilst well finished proved good to sell and very much in demand.

Overall average 186.9p (SQQ 188.1p).
