Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,639 sheep comprising of 585 prime hoggs, 1,549 prime lambs and 1,505 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11th June 2020.

A good show of cast cows, again continuing to sell at recent high rates, with more required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £863 for an Angus cow shown by EAP Glendinning, Over Cassock, Eskdalemuir with Beef Shorthorns to £858 from AN & HS Tomkins, Hallsford, Hethersgill. Top price per kilo of 137p from Over Cassock and to 132p from Hallsford.  

Another large show of 1,549 spring lambs were forward to the same ring of competitive buyers ensuring all classes were well bid, albeit less on the week.  

The sale topped at 251p for a fantastic pen of Beltex lambs consigned by CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries with top price per head of £119.50 for Texel lambs from B & J Dawson, Colinton Mains, Edinburgh.  

Overall average 218.0p (SQQ 218.4p)

A smaller show of 1,505 ewes were forward to the usual ring of competitive buyers ensuring all classes maintained last week’s high rates of return, with lean and light ewes in serious demand and short of purchaser requirements.

Topping the sale at £178 were Texel ewes from Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns with hill ewes selling to £72 for Kendal Rough ewes shown by J I McCrone, Beechcroft, Ivegill. Rams sold to £134 for Suffolks from T E Hutchinson, Chapel, Moffat.
