Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,770 sheep comprising of 3,740 prime lambs and 2,030 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th July 2020.

Another pleasing entry of cast cows; mainly native bred, saw all classes in demand and continuing to sell at recent high rates, with more numbers required on a weekly basis at Longtown. The sale topped at £964 for Luing cows from W Wilson & Co., Geltsdale, Castle Carrock with British Blues to £917 from GW Dinnin, Nether Albie, Waterbeck.

Top per kilo of 134p for Beef Shorthorns from AN & HS Tomkins, Hallsford, Hethersgill, who sold others at 124p. Luings also to 134p from Geltsdale. British Blues sold at 133p and 129p from Nether Albie.

A much larger entry of 3,740 prime lambs, which was an increase of 1,500 head on the week. Heavy lambs continue to be short of buyer’s requirements and selling at a premium. The best quality Beltex lambs 40-45kg regularly sold at 250-290p per kilo. Many more required to satisfy ringside demand.

The sale topped at 290p for Beltex lambs shown by I McConnell, Crawfordhall, Dumfries with top price per head of £130 for Texel lambs from E & A Graham, Upper Mains, Annan.

Texel ewes sold to a top of £145 from ML & LB Bell, Winterhope, Waterbeck with hill ewes selling at £87 for Cheviot ewes from Playfair Farms, Morebattle Tofts, Kelso. Rams sold to £125 for Texels from EJC Dean, Kirk House, Brampton.     

All classes of ewes are in big demand at here at Longtown and can be sold to vendors advantage.
