Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,989 sheep comprising of 2,986 prime lambs and 5,003 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th August 2020.

Cast cows were a smaller entry but continued to sell at recent rates. The sale topped at £957 for a Whitebred Shorthorn from J Waugh, Emblehope, Hexham, who also sold Galloways at 123p. British Blue cows to 120p from R & MG Elliott & Sons, Hallburn Croft, Longtown.  

A smaller show of 3,006 prime lambs saw quality well finished lambs receiving a premium, whilst under finished lambs would prove harder to sell and would be better marketed in the store ring.

The sale topped at 300p for a pen of fantastic Beltex lambs shown by TR & EA Milburn, Wallend, Greenhead with top price per head of £126 for Texel lambs from RF Forster, Pates Hill, Irthington.   

Overall average of 200.9p (SQQ 201.5p)

Another tremendous entry of 5,003 ewes sold to the usual ring of competitive purchasers, ensuring all classes maintained last weeks high rates of return.

Texel ewes sold to a top of £186 from Craig Farm Co., Craig Farm, Langholm with hill ewes selling at £81 for Cheviot ewes from LM Laing, Tarrasfoot, Langholm.

Heavy fat ewes were the flavor of the day with mules regularly breaching £90, and heavy continental ewes consistently realising £110 +.   

Rams sold to a massive demand topping at an eye watering £178 for Texels from Home Robertson Paxton, The Apple House, Berwick.

More ewes are required on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever growing demand, ewes are better marketed sooner rather than later.
