Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,929 sheep comprising of 3,408 prime lambs and 3,521 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th August 2020.

Cast cows were a larger entry and consisted of mainly native bred types, trade remains similar for all classes. The sale topped at £920 for an Angus from DJ & M Moffat, Rigg Smiddy, Gretna with others to £911 from AF & LA Holes, Demesne, Bewcastle. Top price per kilo of 140p for a Limousin from A Taylor & Son, Hopestead, Eyemouth.   

A larger show of 3,408 prime lambs sold to the same competitive ring of purchasers with trade lifting a fantastic 20ppk on the week. Lambs that are well fleshed sold to extreme rates with leaner types still better marketed on store days.

Commercial export lambs regularly fetching 2.20ppk-2.25ppk whilst the trade of the day was the heavy lambs 45kg +. These heavy lambs are still in short supply and can be sold to vendor advantage.

The sale topped at 297p for a fantastic Beltex lamb shown by S & A Moore, Mains of Balhall, Angus with top price per head of £133 for Texel lambs from L & N Shuttleworth, Drumburn, Dumfries.     

Overall average of 221.5p (SQQ 218.9p)

A smaller entry of 3,521 ewes sold to similar rates with heavy ewes and best Texel and Beltex ewes reaching high rates of return. Topping the sale was a penful of Texel ewes sold to a top of £174 from NR Edmondson, Ford Dairy, Berwick.

Hill ewes continue to sell well topping at £74 for Blackface ewes from RJ Coulson & Son, High Staward, Hexham.

Cast rams sold extreme rates topping at £200 for Texels from A & HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick.
