Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,289 sheep comprising of 3,606 prime lambs and 4,683 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd September 2020.

A similar entry of cast cows maintained recent trade; albeit a plainer show. The sale topped at £821 for Galloways from Emblehope & Burngrange Estate, Hexham with top price per kilo of 126p for Luings from JW Davidson & Co., Crosslee, Selkirk. More numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand.

A very mixed show of 3,606 prime lambs forward with weight, best export lambs and well finished lambs being a in big demand.

Topping the sale at 292p was an outstanding Beltex x lamb consigned by regular vendor M/s D Story, Greenburn, Canonbie. This lamb was purchased by Parkin Family Butchers, Goole. Top price per head of £134 for Texel lambs from R Sandison, Smerral, Caithness.

A fantastic run of 86 very well bred and expertly finished Beltex lambs consigned by M/s Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck topped at £130 and 289ppk, averaging a staggering 47kg, 258ppk and £121.

A much larger entry of 4,683 ewes were forward to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring heavy ewes and best Texel ewes maintained last weeks high rates of returns, whist leaner hill types sold to a very fast trade indeed, being £4-£6 up on the week. More can be sold to vendor advantage.

Topping the sale was a penful of Texel ewes which sold to a top of £168 from Harehead Farms, Cranshaws, Duns.  

Hill ewes topping at £79 for Cheviot ewes from Marygate.

Cast rams sold at £145 for Dutch Texels from EJC Dean, Kirk House, Brampton.
