Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,893 sheep comprising of 4,192 prime lambs and 4,701 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th September 2020.

Cast cows remain to sell at recent rate with more numbers required on a weekly basis. Ayrshires to £822 for J Barbour & Co., Machribeg, Campbeltown with Highland cows selling to 101p from Ellary Farms.

A large show of 4,192 prime lambs forward. All classes of well finished lambs are required for our large ringside of buyers with best quality export lambs, heavy lambs & lightweight lambs being in serious demand with many more required.    

Topping the sale at 289p was a tremendous penful of Beltex lambs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Lockerbie, who’s run of 56 Beltex lambs averaged 45kg, 263p and £120.79p per head.

Top price per head of £133 for another pen of wonderful Beltex shown by J Halliday & Son, Linnhead, Lockerbie.

Overall average of 214.5p (SQQ 214.8p)

A larger entry of 4,701 ewes were forward to an increased ringside of 17 buyers operating on 57 separate accounts which produced a seriously competitive ring of purchasers. A huge show of hill ewes forward would be dearer on the week and all classes of ewes sell to record rates for the time of year, eclipsing all other centres.

Topping the sale was Texel ewes which sold at £170 from G Mitchinson & Son, High Greenhill, Kirkcambeck with hill ewes topping at £80 for Cheviot ewes from IHG Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick and from BJ MacDonald, Rowan Croft, Caithness.  

Cast rams sold to serious rates and can be sold to advantage. Topping the sale at £170 was a pen of Texel stock tups from R & K Livesey (Firth), Nether Firth, Melrose.
