Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,784 sheep comprising of 6,199 prime lambs and 2,585 cast ewes & rams plus 39 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd December 2020.

A much larger entry of 39 cast cows were forward, with extra buyers at ringside, all classes met an animated trade and were well bid for. Similar numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £986.85 for a Galloway from the Firm of J Tullie, Bowanhill, Hawick, which also achieved the top price per kilo of 153p. Angus’s to £806 from Cara View and £720 Potholm, with Limousin cows selling to 731 from Low Old Shield. Simmental cows from Archerbeck sold at £723 with Luings to £720 from Blarghour.

Angus from W Skilling, Cara View to 124p and 118p from Bridgewater & Wood. Simmentals sold to 119p and 114p from JA & E Dinwoodie, with Shorthorns to 114p J Jackson & Son, Pole Farm and Whitebred Shorthorns at 113p from G Jackson, Blackburn.  

A much larger show of 6,199 top quality prime lambs were forward. Well finished lambs were very good to sell from start to finish, and again more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Best Beltex and Texel lambs sold to extreme rates trading between 260-280p with several pens breaking the 300ppk barrier, whilst commercial export lambs traded between 225-235p. Topping the price per kilo was an outstanding pair of Beltex lambs consigned by B J Haigh, Breckon Hill, Hexham realising an eye watering 330ppk. These fantastic lambs also topped the price per head making £145.

Heavy continental lambs sold to recent high rates trading between £110-£120, with many pens breaking the £120 mark.

Light lambs were forward in greater numbers being very similar on the week easily maintain last week’s blistering rates. Topping at 328p was a pen of expertly finished Beltex lambs consigned by Messrs DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Crieff, whilst Cheviot lambs topped at 240ppk consigned by G & T Archibald, Craigens Farm, Isle of Islay. Blackface lambs topped at 233p consigned by Messrs Mcclymont, Cuil Farm, Wigtownshire.

Overall average of 214.5p (SQQ 219.2p)

A smaller entry of 2,585 cast ewes and rams were forward. All classes of heavy ewes were on fire, many more are needed to fulfill demand on a weekly basis. Light ewes easily maintained last weeks high rates of return.

Texel ewes proved very good to sell being very deer indeed, topping at a staggering £200 for a pure bred Texel ewe consigned by Messrs A & T Wilson, Baryerrock, Wigtown.

Suffolk ewes topped at £151 for a penful of hefty pure bred ewes consigned by Messrs A Wallace, Claycrop Farm, Newton stewart

Mule ewes broke the £100 topping at £101 for a pen of big scotch bred ewes consigned by Messrs A & T Wilson, Baryerrock.

Hill ewes sold to a top of £86 for a fantastic pen of 34 Blackface ewes shown by G Famelton, Horseholme, Gilsland.  

Rams still good to cash topping at £134 for a Suffolk from I & J Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan.
