Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,446 sheep comprising of 4,520 prime lambs and 1,926 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 29th December 2020.

A much larger show of 4,520 prime lambs were forward with light lambs and commercial export lambs again the trade of the day, with demand outstripping supply and ensuring a blistering trade from start to finish. 

Topping the sale at 337p was a pen of ten Beltex lambs from R & J Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown, who’s run of 40 fantastic lambs went on to average 38kg, 321p and £122.80.

Heavy lambs saw a slight rise in the week with many good runs of commercial heavies averaging well over £105 and sold to a top price of £145 for Texel lambs shown by EJC Dean, Kirk House, Brampton.

Overall average of 232.3p (SQQ 239.2p)

All classes of primestock are required for Thursday 7th January as normal service resumes.

A similar entry of 1,926 cast ewes and rams were forward. All classes of ewes were firmer on the week as numbers tighten. Heavy ewes would be £3-£4 per head sharper and can be sold to vendor advantage here at Longtown. 

Heavy ewes topped the sale at £182 for a Pure Bred Texel ewe shown by T Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield.

Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £130 from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Raughton Head with Mule ewes topped at £97 from Marygate.   

Hill ewes to £88 for Cheviots from J Lamb, Ingleston, Ayr with Blackface ewes topping at £85 for a penful from DA & MA Teasdale, Grindon Hill, Haydon Bridge.

Cast rams saw a big rise on the week being very good to sell and are wanted for next week’s sale. Rams sold to £150 for Texels from D McGregor, Longrigg, Roweltown.
