Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,234 sheep comprising of 4,314 prime hoggs and 2,920 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th February 2021.

A small entry of cast cows continued to sell at recent rates with all classes in demand and more numbers required. Angus cows told to 120p from Tanlawhill Farming, Langholm. Beef Shorthorns to £837 from Achadunan Estate, Argyll.

A larger show of 4,314 hoggs forward.

Topping the sale at 373p was a pen of three Beltex hoggs shown by RN Scott, West Miklethwaite, Wigton. 

Texels topped the price per head at £160 for hoggs from GG & MA Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna. 

Hoggs sharper across the board achieving an overall sale average of 265.5p (SQQ 276.2p).  

All classes of well finished hoggs are a serious trade and more can be sold to vendor advantage on a weekly basis here at Longtown.

A very mixed show of 2,920 ewes sold to an increased ring of purchasers creating a very competitive ring side. 

Over fat and very lean ewes would be slightly easier on the week, whilst all classes of lean meated ewes sold to a big trade and would be short of purchaser requirements. 

Pure Bred Texel ewes topped the sale at £184 and £180 from Marygate. 

Hill ewes to £92 for Cheviots shown by both JWJ Bland, Clea Hall, Wigton and WJC & SJ Weir, Mainside, Hownam. 

Rams sold to £150 for Texels from W & JW Mews, Glendue, Hexham.
