Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,361 sheep comprising of 5,043 prime hoggs and 3,318 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11th March 2021.
Another good show of cast cows forward, all being native bred but quality on offer. The sale topped at £1,153 for an Angus cow shown by JG Murray & Son, Branxholm Brae, Hawick, with other Angus cows selling to £1,028 from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm and to £1,019 from M Moscrop, Collin Bank, Bewcastle.
Top price per kilo of 140p for Angus’ from Sorbie, who also sold others at 139p and 138p. Angus cows from Branxholm Braes to 139p, and Luings to 123p from the same home. Collin Bank had Angus cows to 135p with JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick also selling Angus’ at 131p (x2). More numbers still required on a weekly basis with all classes of cast cows in demand at Longtown.
Another bumper show of 5,043 prime hoggs sold to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes were in serious demand. A Larger show of hill bred hoggs forward with best export sheep in short supply, achieving a remarkable overall sale average of 291.5p and 295.1p SQQ
Again, all classes of well finished hoggs are required to fulfil an immense purchaser demand on a weekly basis here at Longtown with 58 active accounts under operation by 16 very competitive purchasers.
Top price per kilo at 465p was achieved for Beltex hoggs consigned by DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth. Top per head of £186 also achieved for Beltex hoggs shown by Messrs Taylor, Perth, whose run of 27 Beltex hoggs averaged a staggering 40kg, 431p and £174.30.
Heavy hoggs sold to a fast trade with many pens realising £145- £155 topping at £184 for a pair of Dutch Texel tup hoggs consigned by M/s Crozier, Raggetsyke, Lockerbie.
Small hoggs maintained the last fortnights blistering rates of return with Beltex hoggs topping the sale at 465p consigned by M/s Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth. Other Continentals topped at 363p. Cheviots topped at 325p consigned by M/s A & G Francis, Balure, Argyll. Blackface hoggs topped at 300p for a pen of 44 expertly finished hoggs consigned by regular consigner M/s W Wallace & Son, Fingland, Castle Douglas.

A similar show of 3,318 ewes were forward all Ewes are in big demand and keenly sought after for next weeks sale. Today saw heavy ewes return at exactly the same rates as last week whilst lighter horned ewes were slightly firmer on the week.
Heavy ewes topped at £196 for Texel ewes consigned by Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns and Townfoot.
Mule ewes topped at £120 from Woodfoot Farm, Whinneyknowe, Hightae and GW Young & Sons, Flex, Hawick, with an abundance of Mule ewes realising £110-£120.
North Country Cheviots sold to an eye watering £133 being consigned by M/s C Angus, Oldfield, Thurso, whilst Hill ewes sold to a top of £99 for Blackface ewes shown by R Scott, Bankend, Westerkirk then for Cheviot ewes from both W Jackson, Wardlaw, Ettrick and S & J Fisher, Glendiven Cottage, Langholm.
Rams topped at £174 for Suffolks from Thomson Roddick & Laurie, Shawhill, Annan.
